Driftwood All Red Dozen

Tasting Notes

Driftwood reds have established a reputation of robust and powerful reds pumped out from these now mature vines in the heart of Margaret River. The shiraz and cabernets in this mix dozen are exceptional current drinking or medium term cellaring options. Smooth silky tannins, fine oak and dense concentrated fruit are characteristics of Driftwood reds.

The climate is strongly maritime influenced, more so than any other major Australian region. It has the lowest mean annual range of only 7.6C, and for good measure has the most marked Mediterranean climate in terms of rainfall, with only 200 mm of the annual 1160 mm falling between October and April. The low diurnal and seasonal temperature range means an unusually even accumulation of warmth; while spring frosts are very rare and highly localised, lack of winter dormancy and salty spring winds can cause problems unique to this region. Overall the climate is similar (in terms of warmth) to that of Pomerol and St Emilion in a dry vintage; hence the quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and so forth.

BLEND
Cabernet Sauvignon 92%, Shiraz 8%

COLOUR Brilliant garnet red.

AROMATICS Lifted red berries, spice and fresh herbs.

OAK MATURATION 12 to 14 months in 30% new, 70% 1 year old French and Croatian oak barriques.

AGEING POTENTIAL A light year with the balance and fruit to carry medium term ageing.

VINTAGE 2006 A relatively warm and, for recent years wet winter was followed by a long warm but windy spring giving rise to low fruit set in susceptible varieties. Summer was mild and intermittently damp leading to remarkable delays of 4 to 6 weeks in harvest. From the first pick of Chardonnay on 8th March it became apparent that intense fruit flavours would be enhanced by notable delicacy, particularly in the whites, and high aromatics. Disease problems were avoided by sustained diligent work in the vineyard, and the wines from the remarkable season are delicate and intensely aromatic with vibrant fruit flavours.
Driftwood Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2007» 3 x Driftwood Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

AVAILABLE ONLY IN THE DRIFTWOOD MIXED DOZEN

BLEND Shiraz 80%, Cabernet Sauvignon 17%, Merlot 3%

COLOUR Dark purple red.

AROMATICS Aromas of blackberries, aniseed, spice and mocha oak lift.

OAK MATURATION 10 - 12 months in mainly 1 - 3 year old, with 10% in new, mainly American, barriques.

AGEING POTENTIAL Intended for early drinking, but with potential for attractive development over 5 years or so.

VINTAGE 2007 Relatively warm, dry conditions through winter and spring continued through summer, culminating in a hot spell late in the ripening period. In sharp contrast with 2006 harvest began slightly earlier than usual, and proceeded at a steady pace with few disease problems. The return to more normal ripening conditions led to fuller bodied whites with more robust flavours, and well balanced reds with the full range of varietal flavours complemented by good tannin structures and moderate palate weight.
Driftwood Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2008» 3 x Driftwood Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2008

AVAILABLE ONLY IN THE DRIFTWOOD MIXED DOZEN

BLEND Cabernet Sauvignon 45%, Merlot 43%, Cabernet Franc 7%, Shiraz 5%.

COLOUR Dense red.

AROMATICS Cabernet aromas of berries, hints of herbs and undertones of spicy wood smoke.

PALATE A medium bodied seamless marriage of tightly structured Cabernet and soft fruity Merlot, with delicate tannins and sweet fruit on the long finish.

OAK MATURATION 12 - 15 months in French and about 15% Croatian oak.

AGEING POTENTIAL While this wine can be enjoyed now, symmetry between fruit, acid and oak will reward careful cellaring for 2 to 4 years.

VINTAGE 2008 After a late onset to a generally mild wet winter icy gales in late winter and early spring were followed by destructive hail storms just after fruit set. The remainder of the growing and ripening season was warm and fine, allowing welcome opportunity for vine and crop recuperation. Yield recovery from the early setbacks was erratic but thankfully quality, after vigilant disease monitoring and careful canopy management, was not adversely affected. Fruit flavours developed well and ripening was even, with minimal disease pressure. A vintage of modest volume but high quality.
Driftwood Shiraz 2006» 3 x Driftwood Shiraz 2006
Over the year Driftwood has made some of the Margaret River’s best shiraz. This one from the cooler 2006 vintage is a classically elegant and stylish shiraz with fine tannins, subtle oak and persistent fruit. Great drinking over the next couple of years
