McHenry Hohnen Vintners

McHenry Hohnen Vintners is a family owned wine producer sourcing grapes from four vineyards owned within the families of David Hohnen and his brother-in-law Murray McHenry.

Winemaking is handled by David, his daughter Freya and her partner, Ryan Walsh. The McH philosophy embraces minimal intervention winemaking, where each wine is a focussed expression of its variety, its growing season and its individual site.

Within the four vineyards, eighteen varieties are cultivated. These reflect the region's heritage with the Bordeaux varieties (semillon, sauvignon blanc, malbec, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot).

We also acknowledge the Mediterranean climate of Margaret River with varieties associated with southern France and Spain (marsanne, roussanne, grenache, graciano, mataro, shiraz, tempranillo).

Add chardonnay, viognier, barbera, sangiovese and zinfandel and we have the foundations from which we select fruit for the McHenry Hohnen range of wines.

Viticultural practices embrace old-fashioned 'common sense' farming philosophies, cultivating a system in which the soil and its organisms, along with plants, insects and animals, co-exist in a thriving equilibrium.

Woodside Valley Estate

“The early wines from Woodside indicate a potential to make a real statement for both reds and whites from this northern area. The quality and level of sophistication in both the reds and whites are already quite apparent.”

Ray Jordan’s Guide to West Australian Wine 2010

Woodside Valley Estate is an ultra-premium boutique winery situated in northern Margaret River, Western Australia.

Established in 2000, we produce 1500 cases of 100% varietal wine under the banner of The Baudin Collection. The collection and the wine that comprise it, the ‘Baudin’ Cabernet Sauvignon, ‘Bonnefoy’ Shiraz, ‘Bissy’ Merlot and ‘Le Bas’ Chardonnay are named in tribute to Thomas Nicholas Baudin, commander of the crew and scientists aboard the French voyages of Western Australian discovery.

Achieving a string of accolades and international awards over the years, Woodside Valley Estate boasts a reputation of being a quality and consistent wine producer. Some of the significant highlights are;
- 2005 Baudin Cabernet Sauvignon wins the ‘Warren Winiarski’ trophy at the 2008 UK International Wine & Spirits Competition
– the first West Australian winery to EVER win this coveted award, beating 357 Cabernet Sauvignons from all over the world (award introduced in 1978).
- Winning the WA Wine Industry Association’s ‘Most Outstanding New Wine Brand’ – 2004 Wine Industry Awards for Excellence (note - winery established in 2000).
- Winning the WA Wine Industry Association’s ‘Department of Agriculture Award for Most ‘Outstanding’ New Vineyard
– 2003 Wine Industry Awards for Excellence (note - winery established in 2000)
- Numerous James Halliday ratings of 90/100 or above.

One of the most unique aspects of Woodside Valley Estate’s winemaking process is the use of 100% new French & Hungarian oak barriques for ageing, all of which are carefully selected by our winemakers. New oak barrels are purchased for the entire production volume every vintage and we understand this is quite rare in modern Australian winemaking.
